Over 350,000 patients had liposuction procedures in 2008, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. That only includes procedures by board-certified plastic surgeons who are members of that society. When you include other “cosmetic surgeons” including ENT surgeons, dermatologists, gynecologists, family practice doctors, and emergency room physicians, that number is well over 600,000.

During our last broadcast we discussed medical tourism and how it is rapidly becoming a very popular endeavor. According to Deloitte, 750,000 US citizens traveled abroad for medical care in 2007 and 400,000 people came to the US for care. Both of these numbers are expecting to increase significantly.
As I stated previously, patients seek healthcare [...]

I see hundreds of patients in my practice every year, who desire body contouring. By that I mean liposuction, tummy tucks, removal of excess skin and fat from the upper arms and thighs. Some of the patients are overweight, others have lost significant weight through diet and exercise, or surgical procedures such as gastric banding [...]

In the last 20 years, there have been significant advances in treating patients with unwanted fat. In a previous report ,I discussed the various surgical and nonsurgical treatments out there. Liposuction and it’s more advanced techniques, such as laser assisted and ultrasonic assisted liposuction, have improved results with less downtime, less pain, and faster recovery.

Many patients seek body contouring surgery for looseness of the abdominal skin, particularly after childbearing or after massive weight loss. Traditional abdominoplasties, i.e. tummy tuck ,involves making an incision horizontally across the top of the pubic region and extending the incision laterally to the hip bones. The skin and fatty tissue are then elevated off [...]

Baby Boomers have lived through a lot of changes in the American landscape. We started life in the postwar World War II era, lived through the Cold War, lived through the 60s with Vietnam and “Flower Power”. We were the “excess of the 80s”, the “.com era”, and made it to the 21st century. We [...]

As we age, there are a number of internal and external forces that contribute to the development of facial lines and wrinkles, sagging of the skin, as well as changes in pigmentation and texture. Our skin cells no longer hold the moisture or retain the elasticity that they did when we were young. Free radicals [...]

Obesity is one of the major health problems in the United States. It has increased dramatically over the last 40 years. Fast foods, lack of exercise, genetics, and poor diets have all contributed to the increase. It is estimated that 65% of American adults are overweight but it is not just a problem for adults. [...]

With the increase in bariatric surgery (gastric banding and gastric bypass) to treat patients with obesity, there has been a marked increase in the number of reconstructive plastic surgery procedures to treat the excess skin. Known by the common name of upper arm lift, the brachioplasty is a procedure which has increased in popularity from [...]

Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is a procedure for contouring the body by removing localized deposits of fat from different areas of the body. Women complain most about fatty deposits under the chin, in the “hips”, the abdomen, the thighs, both inner and outer, and the knees. Men are bothered by fat under the chin, in the [...]

Much is written about augmentation mammaplasty, or breast enlargement. A favorite past-time of some individuals seems to be speculating as to whether a woman’s breasts are “real” or “fake”. Less publicized is the procedure for making large breasts smaller, called reduction mammaplasty. Women with small breasts often complain, and truthfully so, of feeling of insecurity [...]

The culture in the United States puts a great emphasis on physical appearance. Psychologists have shown that the general public has the perception that “pretty” people are more intelligent, wealthier, and more successful. Even studies in young children demonstrate this perception. As a plastic surgeon, I see this daily in my practice. Patients want to [...]
